Hurricane Michael Update - 5:30 pm October 8, 2018

Good evening all,

Not a lot of change in the forecast.  Michael is still scheduled to make landfall as a Major Hurricane (cat 3+).  The current forecast has our area seeing tropical storm force winds and isolated tornadoes may be possible Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. The rainfall forecast for Wednesday night into Thursday afternoon is 4 to 6 inches.

Operational Updates:

  • Beaufort County is at OPCON 4

  • Town of Hilton Head Island is at OPCON 4 as of 5:00 pm today.

At this point the NWS has not released their evening one page update.  Once I receive the update I will forward it along.  Below is the Hazardous Weather Outlook from the NWS Charleston and current information from the NHC.

Hazardous Weather Outlook from the NWS Charleston

DAY ONE...Today and tonight.

  • Moderate Risk for Rip Currents.

  • Coastal Flooding: Shallow coastal flooding is possible around high tide this evening. A Coastal Flood Advisory could be needed.

DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday.

  • Coastal Flooding: High astronomical tides and onshore winds will likely lead to minor to moderate coastal flooding in low-lying tidal areas during both daily high tide cycles along the southern South Carolina and northern Georgia coasts through mid-week. More significant flooding cannot be ruled out depending on the track and strength of Tropical Cyclone Michael.

  • Rip Currents: Elevated onshore winds and swell waves should lead to an elevated risk along the southern South Carolina and northern Georgia coasts through mid-week.

  • Tropical Weather: The latest forecast for Tropical Cyclone Michael indicates that the storm will move onshore along the northeastern

  • Gulf Coast as a hurricane on Wednesday and then weaken as it stays inland and tracks northeast just far inland areas of Southeast South

  • Carolina and Southeast Georgia. Flooding rainfall, tropical storm force winds and isolated tornadoes will be possible.

We will continue to monitor Michael and provide another update in the morning

Thanks

Tom
